OLPC plans to launch the upcoming second generation of its low-cost XO laptop in the first quarter of 2010, according to an official from the group. The XO-2, an update to the original XO laptop that's designed for low-cost computing for kids in developing nations, will carry two 16-inch by 9-inch touchscreens and eschew a keyboard.

| Amazon to sell laptops from foundation |

Low-cost laptops from the One Laptop Per Child Foundation of Cambridge will go on sale at Amazon.com this holiday season, making the $200 computers available for the first time through a retail store. The foundation's founder, Nicholas Negroponte, said the deal with the online retailer should eliminate delivery problems that arose last year during the first effort to sell XO laptops to the public.

n the summer of 2006, Nicholas Negroponte approached the Indian government with a rather unique proposal. Negroponte's fledgling nonprofit organization, One Laptop Per Child Inc., would sell laptop computers to the government that could be distributed to schools across the country. The asking price? A measly $100 per computer.

There is an international move aimed at providing one laptop per child has already been implemented in such countries as Uruguay which has just celebrated their having reached 100,000 laptops for their children. Other countries in the programme are Thailand and Pakistan, according to Ian Thomson from SPC (Secretariat Pacific Community) of the Forum Secretariat.

A low-cost XO laptop from the One Laptop Per Child Project that carries both Windows and Linux will be out within the next month or so, according to an OLPC official. The dual-boot XO laptop was expected to be available in August or September. The new device will allow users to boot the OS they prefer, either Microsoft Windows XP or the Linux-based Sugar OS originally found on the XO.

The so-called $100 laptop from the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative will be available via Amazon.com in the US from November. The cheap laptop, originally designed solely for schoolchildren in emerging economies and not for western economies, will be available under OLPC's Give One, Get One programme, under which a person pays for two of the XO laptops - one to keep and one that's donated to a child in a developing country.

Announced in February as a part of Labor’s budget forecast, the Digital Education Revolution aims to provide all students in Years 9 to 12 with access to ICT.
