Issuing computers to every student in a school district is about more than just dropping a laptop on their desk. Much more. “It’s about changing mindsets and actual education and how it’s delivered and how it’s accessed,” said Bryan Weinert, director of technology for Leyden District 212. From July 31 to Aug. 2, District 212 held a symposium at West Leyden High School on issuing computers to all students, referred to as 1:1 computing. The event drew 300 attendees from 14 states and 70 different schools or school districts. District 212 issued Chromebooks, a type of laptop developed by Google, to each of its almost 3,500 students in August 2012. In the process of researching 1:1 computing, District 212 sent 11 people to a symposium in the Mooresville, N.C. school district in the summer of 2011. |
