Birmingham isn't known for being first in many things. And thanks to the initiative of recently convicted Mayor Larry Langford, we are the first major city in the United States (or in any developed nation) to hand out massive numbers of XO laptops to our schoolchildren on a one-to-one basis. It has been a little more than a year since 15,000 Birmingham students in kindergarten through the fifth grade were each given a computer, at a cost of $200 apiece. |
