School does away with traditional teaching |
Posted by: Susan Einhorn |
Tradition has been tossed aside at Louisiana New Tech at Plain Dealing. There are no textbooks, no lined up desks, no teacher lecturing as students rush furiously to fill notepads. Even the school name is different. Instead, students begin each day by logging onto a computer and reading an agenda of items due. There are no tests, but there are projects and students must conduct group presentations to make the grade. With $400,000 from the Bossier Parish School Board, Plain Dealing's high school partnered this school year with New Tech Network, which develops learning environments better tailored to 21st century learners. Under the New Tech program, there are more computers than students at the 122-student high school, an interactive whiteboard in every classroom and combined courses designed to maximize learning potential. |
