New high school boosts hopes for students and city
Posted by: Susan Einhorn

As 1,250 students prepare to enter the new $81.5 million Beverly High School on Tuesday, city officials and educators are looking forward to shedding an academic probation designation that helped spawn the construction of the costliest municipal spending project in the city’s history.

One of the biggest changes in learning style will come next September, when the high school will become the first secondary school north of Boston to require students to have a laptop. The “one-to-one initiative’’ will offer students the choice of either leasing or buying a MacBook for around $25 a month, said Superintendent Marie Galinski. The school will have a computer technician, and students will be able to receive a loaner while their laptops are being fixed. Also, students who decline to buy or lease a MacBook will be loaned a laptop during school hours.
