Well, it's closer to $188, but Nicholas Negroponte's vision has finally reached schools In Montevideo, just $5 (£3.20) per month puts a PC on each school desk and provides a Wi-Fi connection. The "one laptop per child" dream of Nicholas Negroponte -- a founder of US Wired and of the One Laptop per Child Association (OLPC) -- is now a reality, with 400,000 computers transforming the lives of students, parents and entrepreneurs. "The first country brave enough to do this was Uruguay," says Negroponte. "Imagine a truly democratic society, where the inhabitants are connected to the internet and can express themselves on any issue," says Miguel Brechner Frey. "It's not about lessons in ICT or having a free laptop. The real revolution is the ability to transform a privilege of the elite into a right for all." |
