Laptop delivery closing the opportunity gap in schools |
Posted by: Susan Einhorn |
AS computer literacy becomes the norm among students in urban primary schools across the nation, many children in rural and regional Australia are still lagging behind their city cousins. But the gap is rapidly closing, partly thanks to the One Laptop Per Child program that has been rolling out the wireless computers to schools in remote parts of Australia since 2009. Yesterday, the 40 students of Long Flat Primary School, 20km west of Port Macquarie on the NSW mid-north coast, became the latest recipients of the XO laptops. Local member Rob Oakeshott was on hand to present the devices -- 5000 of which have been deployed so far to indigenous and non-indigenous children in more than 80 of the country's most isolated communities. |
