Personal digital devices in West Haven classrooms a possibility come fall |
Posted by: Susan Einhorn |
As soon as next fall, students could be unpacking laptops and cellphones from their backpacks to use in class without risking detention or a talking-to from a teacher. District administrators and information technology staff members are studying the feasibility of a “bring your own device” policy. If implemented, it would allow students to bring from home laptops, netbooks, iPads, iPods and smart phones that they could use in class, despite risks of equipment abuse, loss or theft. Existing policies ban students from bringing electronics to school. Superintendent of Schools Neil Cavallaro recently briefed the Board of Education on the initiative, and the district also administered surveys to parents and students in grades five through 12. Cavallaro says he feels students must become familiar with and comfortable using the gadgets if they are going to be prepared for the demands of college and work. |
