It's no small feat to lead an urban school system. And longstanding achievement gaps in the Huntsville system, between some of the poorer and some of wealthier neighborhoods, make the challenge here even greater. Superintendent Casey Wardynski, a former Army colonel groomed for school leadership by a private think tank, moves quickly. That was necessary when he stepped into the breech, taking on a rudderless system the board had allowed to drift into $20 million in debt. But until he handed out the computers, there was little city-wide questioning of the rookie superintendent. But the rollout exposed yet another gap within Huntsville City Schools, a digital divide between those with Internet access at home and those without. |
